Leading Your Workforce Through Uncertainty

April 8, 2023

Recent events have left many organizations, and their workforces, struggling to adapt to a new, uncertain future. As leaders, it can be difficult to effectively lead a workforce when the path ahead isnt clear. To help navigate such waters, here are a few key tips to keep in mind.

First and foremost, communication is key. Get ahead of the conversation by being honest and transparent, provide frequent updates and clear instructions, and be open to feedback. According to a survey by the Society for Human Resource Management, 82% of employees believe that their organization communicates well during times of upheaval. Though this number is reassuring, its important to remain vigilant.

Second, be flexible. Its likely that expectations and tasks may need to change to accommodate for the new landscape. Make sure to adjust, offer options and listen to the concerns of your workforce. A survey conducted by Gallup found that 53% of employees felt that their organization is promoting flexibility in their approach during times of uncertainty.

Third, prioritize mental health. Stress levels and feelings of burnout have soared during this time. Make sure to encourage rest, provide mental health resources, and lend comfort where you can. The CDC reports that during the coronavirus pandemic, more than 20% of adults experienced an increase in mental health symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and traumatic stress.

Finally, trust in your team. They’re the ones who will make the tough decisions and navigate their organizations through these tough times. According to the Harvard Business Review, 61% of Human Resource professionals feel that their employees are “capable of leading through uncertainty.”

Leading a workforce through uncertain times can be daunting, but it’s possible with a little bit of patience, understanding, and flexibility. As leaders, it’s our responsibility to ensure that the workforce feels supported and in control. If done right, organizations can come out of this period stronger and more resilient than before.
